Homeschool/Unschool Page

To teach is to love. I would say that sums up the reason we decided to homeschool perfectly. We love our children very much and want the best possible things in life for them. We feel homeschooling will give them that. We are getting ready to begin our 3rd year homeschooling. It has been an adventure. There have been many ups and downs along the way. Many times I have wondered what in the world made me think I could do this? I wasn't sure that I wanted to continue but now know that I do. Our son, Jared, is 11 and will techincally be in the 6th grade this year and our daughter, Mikaela, is 3 and is a preschooler. Jared enjoys being at home and does not want to go back to public school. We are not against public school and we believe there are many good teachers out there. We did not have a good experience with public school and our son's self-esteem and academics suffered because of it. We are still finding our way. We have choosen to do a combination of homeschooling and unschooling this year. Unschooling is child led learning. The child chooses what to learn. We, the parents, provide the resources and act as facilitators. We love the versatility of unschooling but still feel there are areas where more concentration is needed. We change things as we go to suit our needs. I have never seen my son so excited about learning! :o) I truthfully think I am learning more than they are sometimes. We are becoming closer as a family. We are learning things about our children that we might have missed otherwise. I think that Jared is even getting to know his little sister and appreciate her more even though there is an 8 year age difference. We are still working on the issue of socialization. We live in a rural community with not much for kids to do. Jared is shy and somewhat of a loner and not into joining things. It can be hard since most of his friends are in public school. There are other homeschoolers in the area. I would love to start a local homeschool support group. :o) I hope that this page, humble as it is, will be an inspiration to others who are new to homeschooling and or unschooling. It can be and is a very rewarding experience. For those just starting out I recommend checking out the Homeschool Legal Defense Association's website listed below. It has links for the state organization for every state and a summary of every state's laws on homeschooling.
I will be adding more unschooling resources in the future.

The following are all links that we use a lot and find very useful. I hope you will find them useful too. :o)

Kids are like Jell-O, you have to put a lot of good stuff in before they 'set'.

Children's Eyes

What kind of world is it my friend
    that little children see?
I wonder if they see God first
    because they just believe?

Do they see strength in caring eyes
who watch them as they play --
or maybe love through gentle hands
that guide them on their way?

Do you think they dream of future times
when they would be a king --
or just enjoy their present life
while with their friends they sing?

Do they see the acts of kindness
done for people who are poor?
Is the very best in everyone
    what they are looking for?

And when the day is over,
as they close their eyes to sleep,
do they look forward to tomorrow
    with its promises to keep?

If this is what the children see,
then it should be no surprise,
the world would be a better place
if we all had children's eyes.
